Inside Campus Partners
Kaylin Murphy, Human Resources Assistant

January 2009

Kaylin Murphy, Human Resources Assistant for Campus Partners, is the consummate up and coming professional. Working closely with her manager and mentor, Pat Shepherd, Director, Human Resources, Kaylin takes her responsibilities for payroll processing, benefits administration, new hire orientation, employee recruitment, and responding to employee questions very seriously. Because of legal requirements, all her work must be highly accurate and fair. While she faithfully follows the “letter of the law” in carrying out these duties, Kaylin’s job does have a fun side, which allows her to be creative and interact with employees on a frequent, more casual basis. These duties include planning employee events and activities and coordinating the work of the Activities Committee and Community Outreach Committees. You could almost envision her as the company cheerleader, and she has an important roll in keeping employee morale high.

Kaylin has learned a great deal since joining the company in June 2006, just weeks after her graduation from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in communications. She credits Pat Shepherd with advancing her career and knowledge base. “Pat has taught me how to be a good employee since my first day here. She is constantly providing me with detailed information about Human Resources, regulations, procedures, and allows me to sample every aspect of HR,” Kaylin stated. “She has been a great teacher.”

Pat also clearly has much admiration for Kaylin. “From the very first time a new employee talks with and meets Kaylin, they quickly know that the Human Resources department at Campus Partners is a place where they can feel comfortable coming back to for help. We believe in the open door policy and Kaylin lives the open door policy. She is able to communicate with all employees in a way that lets them know that HR is here to help them. She is a delightful person and I enjoy having her be the face of the department,” stated Pat with much enthusiasm.

As much as she likes the administrative side of her job, Kaylin is clearly enthusiastic about the social side of her job as well. One of her favorite duties is planning employee events, such as an upcoming holiday lunch for employees. Kaylin has also helped plan a company picnic that was held in June, the first event of its kind for our company, as well as many other events over the past two and a half years. She works with the Activities Committee to plan contests, Valentine’s Day and Breast Cancer Awareness month activities, as well as several other events.

She is also very proud of the work of the Community Outreach Committee. The group sponsors food drives, the Relay for Life, breast cancer awareness activities, and is a partner with Wiley Middle School, a nearby public school. Each year, the company conducts a school supply drive because many of Wiley’s students cannot afford to purchase items such as markers, paper, glue sticks, and the usual items that are must-haves for students. The outpouring of supplies is very generous, and the principal, teachers, and students at the school are very appreciative of the help they receive from our employees.

Since higher education is so important to our company, the committee also sponsors a scholarship program that helps us give back to our school customers. The Achievement Scholarship was established in 2007, and is now open to students attending the 25 colleges and universities that have been with Campus Partners for the longest period of time. The committee contacted these customers to assess their interest in the scholarship and mailed an application to each of the schools. After receiving several applications, the committee awarded three external scholarships this year and one scholarship went to a dependent of a Campus Partners’ employee.

Kaylin is originally from the suburbs of New York City, but has lived in Greensboro, NC since she was a young teenager. She is extremely close to her family, which includes her parents, a sister, and an adorable niece and nephew. Kaylin’s sister lives in New Jersey with her family, but Kaylin makes frequent trips to visit them, and the extended family takes many vacations together. She is not embarrassed to say that her family means “everything” to her. She considers them as significant role models who have helped her in developing her career and her life.

Besides her family and that adorable niece and nephew, Kaylin’s passion is aerobic dancing, an activity that helps her stay fit and healthy. She was a member of a dance team in college and loves to dance. She also likes to be around friends and attend social events and other goings-on. Not surprisingly, she loves music of all kinds, but is particularly fond of music from the 80s and artists like Madonna and U2. In addition, Kaylin has a secret penchant for reality TV and enjoys watching shows like The Bachelor and The Hills. She says the shows are so different from her life and anything she would ever do herself that they provide a real escape for her.

One thing is for sure-Kaylin is a far cry from TV drama queens, and the proof of that is the high regard everyone has for Kaylin here at Campus Partners. From ensuring payroll accuracy to planning morale building activities, Kaylin can handle it all with charm and style.
