After working more than 30 years in the student loan industry, Tom Green could have retired and spent his days playing golf, fishing, or vacationing at the beach. Instead, Tom, who is one of our new owners and Vice Chairman of Campus Partners, divides his time between several new businesses he has established in recent years. Campus Partners, his latest acquisition, is the focus of much of his attention these days as he helps with technology planning and marketing efforts for the company.
Tom brings much management and technical expertise to Campus Partners.
He worked for 20 years for Computer Data Systems, Inc, and eventually
became president of the company. When the company was sold to
ACS, Tom stayed on as president of their Business Applications
Solutions Company for about 18 months. Then, he went to Sallie
Mae where he served as Senior Vice President and President of
Sallie Mae Solutions, a start-up company focused on providing
colleges and universities with business system solutions.
Later, Tom co-founded Student
Trust, a student loan consolidation company, and established Exeter
Government Services (EGS), as a subsidiary of the Exeter Group.
EGS provides management consulting, custom application development,
and systems integration to government clients.
Tom believes that his experience delivering technical solutions
to state and federal governments and colleges is one of the greatest
assets he brings to Campus Partners. Tom already is leveraging
his resources to help Campus Partners develop iPROMise,
a Web-based entrance interview product. However, he feels his
most valuable asset is his ability to attract and retain good
people. "You cannot underestimate the importance of having
good people in any organization," Tom said. As he investigated
buying our company, he was happy to find good people, who were
committed to customer service. In Tom's mind, the only two things
lacking were an infusion of capital for technological improvements
along with a renewed push to retain and attract clients.
One of his goals is to continue to find ways to give schools and
their borrowers easier access to online technology, thus expanding
their operational efficiency. Tom sees technology as just a tool
to increase efficiency. It is an important tool, but it will never
replace excellent customer service in Tom's opinion. "We
should use technology, not lead with technology," Tom said.
"Most of our customers are full service customers, and we
do the bulk of their servicing work for them. That's where excellent
customer service makes a difference."
As he helps develop a technology plan for the company, Tom is
keeping the customer firmly in mind. He does not want to deliver
products that are too costly or too complicated for the majority
of our customer base.
Communication is also important in developing effective products.
"We are very committed to supporting schools and their borrowers
and eager to hear from customers about any issues or concerns
that they have. We need an open dialogue with our customers to
better serve the marketplace," Tom explained.
As a leader in the student loan industry, Tom has a clear picture
of successful companies. "Successful companies have high
integrity and do not take advantage of their customers. They cannot
become complacent and must have a drive for continual improvement.
They need to have mind set of 'What can I do to improve things?'
You can't get by on doing only what is necessary. You need to
focus on improvement." Tom sees the drive for improvement
quickly emerging at Campus Partners and expects Campus Partners
to become the leader in campus based loan products and services
very soon. To Tom, success is measured in terms of how well our
products meet the needs of our customers, rather than just in
financial terms.
A true entrepreneur, Tom is involved in a business venture that
is building beach homes and also owns a pre-school. His grandson
and granddaughter attend the school, which Tom's daughter-in-law
directs. Tom seems to enjoy all the kidding he has received about
being Daddy Day Care since the movie of the same name was released
last year. Tom is also a committed Washington Capitals hockey
fan.
Tom and his wife, Elaine, live in Great Falls, VA, and he is a graduate of Ohio State University.
